Tiny fields,
vast aspirations
Having lived in two different states (New York and Miami), a new country (Switzerland), and then moving back to California, I found myself uncertain of what to expect and how to manage my emotions about home. For eight years, New York was my home, where the city bustled with life and I could get anywhere by public transportation. There was always an abundance of activity, with a plethora of choices and a palpable energy that infused my everyday existence. Living in Miami, on the other hand, was a calmer experience, but one that represented a complete cultural shift. I didn't have much time to reflect on the changes until I was faced with another big move across the continent, this time to Switzerland, and I was already halfway through my pregnancy. Looking back, I realize that moving to Switzerland was a decision made in haste, but one that was full of hope.

Living in Switzerland was an incredible experience, especially because of the boundless nature that surrounded me. People there were so connected to nature, which was the exact opposite of what I had experienced in New York. Switzerland was far from the concrete jungle and the energy-draining city atmosphere. In my neighborhood, almost every neighbor had an urban homestead, complete with seasonal vegetables, fruit trees, and herbs. The air was crisp, the neighborhood was safe, and my son was growing up in a great environment full of nature-focused activities. I felt relaxed and in tune with my body, and gained more clarity about how I wanted to live the rest of my life.

However, my expat life in Switzerland was short-lived. After 3.5 years of residence, I returned to California during the Pandemic. I find myself constantly searching for all the things that feels authentic. I felt lost in my career, I wanted something to ground me that propels my changing believes and finding purpose and meaning in my work. My most consuming thought was how to create a sustainable living base with the resources available to me. I was optimistic about California and constantly search for businesses that embodied these beliefs. It was through this search that I discovered The Ecology Center.

The Ecology Center in San Juan Capistrano is a long awaited change I am absolutely thrilled to have discovered this regenerative farm nestled near the coast of Orange County. From the moment I set foot on the farm, I was struck by the beauty of the landscape and the incredible sense of community that permeated the air.

What I love most about The Ecology Center is its commitment to seasonal growing of fruit and vegetables. The farm operates in harmony with the natural rhythms of the earth, ensuring that the crops are always fresh and bursting with flavor. I could taste the difference in the farm produce compared to store-bought produce. It was a real treat to savor the delicious, crisp vegetables and juicy, sweet fruits that were in season.

Another aspect of The Ecology Center that I find truly inspiring is its programs for kids. Through these programs, children are taught how to grow and harvest food, cook them, make crafts, and understand where our food comes from and what it means to eat healthy. I was delighted to see the enthusiasm and curiosity in the kids' eyes as they explored the farm, dug their hands into the soil, and tasted fresh produce. It's heartening to know that there are places like this where children can learn about sustainable agriculture and develop a lifelong love for nature.

The farm also sells its organic farm produce, which is free from pesticides and other harmful chemicals. The produce is truly farm-to-table, and it's reassuring to know that I am consuming food that is healthy for me and the planet. The farm also has fresh eggs that are not washed or disinfected, a reminder of the authentic farm-to-table experience that I was lucky to have.

Overall, my visit to The Ecology Center has left me feeling optimistic about the future of alternative farming practices. The farm's commitment to sustainability, community, and education is truly inspiring, and it's heartening to see that there are people who are dedicated to preserving our planet and nourishing our bodies with healthy, delicious food. I can't wait to visit again and continue to support this incredible establishment.
